A year in the life of Toft

Toft 2020

Toft Social Club

TSC Online Quizzes

During the first lockdown, the Social Club held weekly Friday Night Open Sessions on Zoom for people to get together, and a two weekly quiz.

With winter approaching we have restarted the two weekly quiz.

TSC Online Quiz

The first of our regular online quizzes took place tonight. We had a very good turnout and after a few difficulties getting everyone used to go off to "tables", had a very enjoyable and successful evening. The quiz was won by The Blue Loins!

TSC Online

Toft Social Club has started holding Open Evenings using Zoom video conferencing on a Friday Evening, from 8:30. The idea is that village folk can come along to the online Social Club and meet friends in the main bar, or head off to a table for chats in smaller groups. The first evening has been very successful and will continue every Friday throughout the duration of the Lockdown.

TSC Countdown

The Social Club trialed a video conference based Countdown evening tonight - 8 teams took part using "Zoom" conferencing. It worked pretty well, so the plan is to try it again.

It's not the same as being at the Club, but in these tricky times, it made a good second best.

Toft Beer Festival Award

The Cambridge and District CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) have just
announced their 2020 Branch Award Winners and Toft Social Club Beer
Festival Team have been awarded the REAL ALE CHAMPIONS AWARD.

This is a great accolade for Toft Social Club, and especially for the many people in the Beer Festival Team who make it such a great event!

It is particularly poignant coming at a time when we are sadly closed due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Informal Music Night

A group of local musicians all played at the Club tonight - with a varied mix of music enjoyed by those there.

Toft Social Club AGM

Toft Social Club held its AGM tonight - the meeting was slightly unusual in that the Secretary forgot to turn up, so our Chairman, Richard, had to wing it slightly. The committee was re-elected other than Katrina who had stepped down, and we are pleased to be welcoming Liz onto committee.

The accounts showed that a Deed of Covenant in excess of 5,000 pounds had been paid over to the People's Hall.

The AGM was followed by a TSC Committee Meeting, where forthcoming events, new members and finances were discussed.

Quiz Night

The final night of a busy weekend was the Quiz Night. 9 teams took part, with "The Blue Loins" (Eve, Roger, Ben, David / Mags) taking first place. Quizmaster tonight was Martin.

Film Club

We showed the Aardman animated movie "Farmageddon" tonight - which is the latest Shawn the Sheep movie. A spoof on all things alien and sci-fi, it was a mix of the usual magnificent animation, clver references and hilarious jokes.

A full house roared with laughter at the fun!

Food on Friday

Approximately 40 people enjoyed a valentine "haggis" at our monthly Food on Friday. Inspired by Burns Night, Jean and Jake prepared a meal of haggis, neeps and tatties. Marion and others had desoratedthe hall, with tasteful pink table clothes inscribed with romantic words!

A great evening - enjoyed by everyone there.

Quiz Night

Tonight's quiz was won by our regular visitors from Comberton. The Quiz Master was Jake.

Recording of the Open Mic Night

There was only one Open Mic Night in 2020. Attached is a recording of the evening.

Seaside Special Rehearsals

Sunday saw the opportunity for those taking part in forthcoming Seaside Special to rehearse on the stage, and to get the final props, sound and staging right. This all caused much merriment!

TSC Committee

TSC held its first committee meeting of the year at 7:30 at TPH. The discussions included the Annual Accounts for the forthcoming AGM, election of committee members at the AGM, events for the coming months and some changes to availability of some soft drinks.

TSC Quiz

A well attended evening at the quiz, and although they were handicapped on their joker round due to their previous win, the winners tonight were Scraping the Barrel.

Quiz Night

Tonight's quiz was won by Scraping The Barrel (Peter, Phil and Derek). The Quiz Master was Richard.

TSC Film Club

The first film of 2020 was "Kursk: The Last Mission" which tells the story of the sinking of the Kursk submarine in the Black Sea in 2000, and the appalling handling of the rescue by the Russian state.

A reasonable sized crowd turned up and all thoroughly enjoyed the well put together film.
